Dear readers:
First off I want to assure I will be talking about more than kids, parenting, eduation & so forth. Yes these things will come up often, but there’s plenty more on my mind. The economy is in the crapper, there are big changes happening in government & technology is advancing at a phenominal rate. I’m sure I’ll have plenty to talk about.
This blog takes its name from Dead Reckoning, which is your internal compass’s ability to judge where you are based upon where you’ve been & how far you’ve come. Therefore Dad Reckoning(at least in my case) means parenting by the seat of my pants, figuring it out as I go based upon the mistakes I’ve made in the past. I don’t know about you, but my kid didn’t come with a manual (or a warranty for that matter) & the manufacturer hasn’t returned my calls. So my clueless ass is left to figure it out. God help us all.
My writing style is a bit informal as I tend to write the way I speak & invent words & contractions as I go. I use commas as a pause they way I would when speaking. I’m a big fan of using (parenthises) as captions/voiceover/footnotes as I go along. I use ‘tick’ marks like I would air quotes in conversation. One distinct advantage of writing over speaking is that I can edit & proofread myself. I tend to swear too much & speak ‘off the cuff’ in person so I’m hoping to keep this a little more PG-13.
I often use Wikipedia as a reference in my posts. I know that some people don’t consider that a valid source. While its not comprehensive, it does make a good jumping off point & provides quick, consise answers & external links & footnotes for further investigation.
I owe this whole thing to my ‘brother from another Mother’ Maurice. It started out as research for starting his blog. I chalked it up to him just being narrsisstic, but the more I looked into it, the more I realized I had a lot to say. Does that make me a hippocrite?
